Where to Stay in Belgrade: Best Neighborhoods for Tourists

Where to Stay in Belgrade: Best Neighborhoods for Tourists

24 July 2026

Where to stay in Belgrade as a tourist

Choosing where to stay in Belgrade comes down to how central you want to be and what kind of evening you are after. The good news is that the best neighborhoods for tourists sit close together on the right bank of the Sava, and with public transport free across the city since January 2025, even the areas a little further out are easy to reach. Here is how the main districts compare, and who each one suits.

Stari Grad (Old Town): best for first-time visitors

Stari Grad is the historic core and the easiest base if it is your first trip. From here you can walk to Belgrade Fortress, Knez Mihailova, Republic Square and Skadarlija in fifteen minutes or less, and you are surrounded by restaurants, cafes and sights. You pay a small premium for hotels here, and rooms right by Skadarlija can be noisy at weekends, but for sheer convenience nothing else comes close.

Dorćol: central but calmer

Just northeast of the old town, Dorćol is a grid of quiet residential streets with some of the city's best cafes, wine bars and small restaurants. You are still a short walk from the main sights and close to the Danube, but the mood is more local and relaxed. It suits travelers who want to feel like residents rather than sightseers, and it is a favorite with people who come back.

Savamala: design and nightlife by the river

Savamala, along the Sava below the old town, is the city's design and going-out district, with clubs, bars and the Beton Hala waterfront nearby. It is a lively choice if nightlife is a priority, though for the same reason it can be loud after dark, so ask for a room away from the street. The Belgrade Waterfront development and the Sava promenade are right on its doorstep.

Vračar: leafy and local

South of the center, Vračar is an upscale residential area built around the Temple of Saint Sava and the Kalenić green market. Tree-lined streets, neighborhood cafes and easy tram links make it a comfortable, quieter base that is still only a short ride or a longish walk from the sights. It is a good middle ground between atmosphere and calm.

Zemun: old-world charm on the Danube

Zemun was a separate town under Austro-Hungarian rule and still looks the part, with red roofs, the Gardoš Tower and a riverfront lined with fish restaurants. It is about twenty to thirty minutes from the center by bus or taxi, so it trades some convenience for character. Choose it for a second visit, a slower trip, or if you simply prefer a village feel by the water.

Novi Beograd: modern and convenient

Across the Sava, Novi Beograd (New Belgrade) is the modern side of the city, all wide boulevards and apartment blocks, with large hotels, the Štark Arena and the fairgrounds. It has less old-town character, but it is handy for the airport, for business travel and for anyone who wants newer, larger rooms at better value. Tram and bus links to the center are quick.

How to choose your Belgrade neighborhood

  • First trip and want to walk everywhere: Stari Grad.
  • Quieter but still central: Dorćol or Vračar.
  • Nightlife on your doorstep: Savamala.
  • Charm over convenience: Zemun.
  • Modern rooms and value: Novi Beograd.

Whichever you pick, distances in Belgrade are short and transport is free, so you are never far from the action. Book early for late spring and September, when the best-value central rooms go quickly.

Your local explorer

Belgrade's bohemian quarter is a cobblestone paradise of traditional restaurants, street art, and the lingering spirit of 19th-century poets.
