The best time to visit Belgrade

The best time to visit Belgrade is late spring or early autumn, when the weather is mild and the city is at its liveliest outdoors. Belgrade has a continental climate, which means warm to hot summers, cold winters and quick changes in between. What you choose depends on whether you want river beaches and festivals or lower prices and quiet streets. Here is the year, month by month.

Spring (March to May)

Spring is one of the two sweet spots. March can still be grey and chilly, but by late April and May the parks are green, terraces reopen and daytime temperatures sit comfortably in the high teens and low twenties Celsius. May in particular is close to ideal for walking the fortress and the riverfront.

Summer (June to August)

Summers are hot, with July and August highs often around 30 to 31°C and warm evenings. This is peak season for the splavovi (floating river clubs), for swimming at Ada Ciganlija and for open-air festivals. June is also the rainiest month, with short thunderstorms. At the height of August the heat can be heavy and some locals leave for the coast, so the city feels a little quieter.

Autumn (September to November)

September is the other prime month, still warm but without the fierce heat, and a good time for food, wine and long evenings outside. October cools steadily and stays pleasant, while November turns grey, wet and noticeably colder as the outdoor season winds down.

Winter (December to February)

Winters are cold, with January the coldest month at around 1 to 2°C on average and nights that dip below freezing. Snow is possible from December to February. The trade-off is a cozy indoor season of kafanas and coffee houses, festive New Year celebrations (which Belgrade does with real enthusiasm), fewer tourists and lower hotel prices.

Festivals and seasonal events

The events calendar can help you decide. Late spring brings the Night of Museums (Noć muzeja), when many venues open late for a single evening at little or no cost, and the city fills with people moving between exhibitions. Summer is the busiest stretch, from open-air arts programs to the long-running Belgrade Beer Fest at Ušće in August and frequent concerts by the rivers. Autumn leans toward food, wine and film, while the New Year period lights up the center with open-air music that Belgrade takes seriously.

What to pack for each season

Layers make sense here because the weather can swing quickly, especially in spring. For spring and autumn, bring a light jacket and something for rain. Summer calls for sun protection, light clothing and a refillable water bottle, since the tap water is safe to drink. In winter, pack a warm coat, gloves and shoes that cope with the odd bout of snow or slush.
