Ada Ciganlija: Belgrade's River Beach and How to Enjoy It

Belgrade's sea on the Sava

Ada Ciganlija is where Belgrade goes to cool off. A wooded former island on the Sava river, now joined to the bank and wrapped around a long artificial lake, it sits only a few kilometres from the city centre and yet feels like a proper day out of town. Locals half-jokingly call it more, the sea, and in a landlocked country that is not far from the truth. On a hot weekend a huge share of the city seems to be here, swimming, cycling, playing sport or drinking coffee under the trees.

The lake and the beaches

The heart of Ada is Sava Lake, a calm channel closed off from the river and lined with several kilometres of pebble and grass beaches. The water is monitored for quality, long stretches fly the Blue Flag, and lifeguards watch the main swimming areas in season. The shore is shallow and gently sloping, which makes it good for families and weaker swimmers, though it gets busy and loud at the popular central stretches. Quieter spots, including a pet beach and a naturist section, sit toward the far western end.

What to do

On the water

You can swim, rent a pedal boat or kayak, paddleboard, row, or watch the water polo and rowing clubs train. Adrenaline options cluster near the dam end, where there is a bungee jump and a zip line across the water.

On land

A flat path of roughly eight kilometres loops the lake and is ideal for cycling, running, roller skating or a long walk. There are dozens of sports courts, a golf course, table tennis, an adventure park and space simply to lie on the grass. Bikes, loungers and umbrellas can be rented on site.

Eating and drinking

The shore is lined with cafes, fast-food kiosks and floating bars. This is a good place to try Serbian grill food (pljeskavica, ćevapi) and cold beer without paying centre-of-town prices, though the lakeside cafes charge a small premium for the view.

How to get there

Ada is close to the centre and easy to reach without a car. Several bus lines and the tram serve the Čukarica side near the entrance, and from there it is a short walk across to the lake. Cycling is arguably the nicest approach, with bike paths running along the Sava from the city and from New Belgrade. If you drive, there are car parks near the entrances that fill up early on summer weekends. Entry to Ada itself is free, and you pay only for rentals, activities and food.

When to go

Swimming season runs roughly from June to early September, when the water is warm enough and all the rentals are open. July and August afternoons are the busiest and hottest, so arrive in the morning for a lounger and shade, or come in the early evening when families thin out and the bars fill up. Outside summer Ada does not close. Spring and autumn are excellent for cycling and walking, and even in winter people run and cycle the loop, though the beach cafes wind down.

Local tip: weekdays are far calmer than weekends. If you can visit Monday to Thursday you will get the beach, the bike path and the cafes without the crowds, and rentals are easier to find.

Practical notes

• Bring cash for rentals and kiosks, though many cafes take cards.
• Shade is limited on the open beaches, so take a hat and water on hot days.
• Facilities such as changing areas and toilets exist but can be stretched at peak times.
• Keep an eye on the posted swimming flags and stay in the supervised zones.
