Learning Serbian: Basics and Survival Phrases for Newcomers

Short answer: you can survive without it, but life gets warmer fast when you try. In Belgrade almost everyone under 30 speaks solid English, cafe and restaurant menus are often bilingual, and hotel and tech staff are used to switching languages. But the moment you greet someone with Dobar dan or thank them with Hvala, faces soften. Older neighbours, market vendors, and bus drivers may speak little English, so a handful of phrases turns awkward silences into small kindnesses. Serbs are genuinely charmed by foreigners who try, and they will happily correct you.

Serbian is written in both Cyrillic (ћирилица) and Latin (latinica), and the two have equal official status. You'll see Latin on most cafe menus, signs, and social media, and Cyrillic on official documents, street plaques, and many bakeries. Here's the reassuring part: each alphabet has exactly 30 letters, and they map onto each other one-to-one. Learn the Cyrillic set and you can read a metro sign, a pharmacy name, or a protest banner. Reformer Vuk Karadžić built the system on one motto:

Serbian is phonetic in the strictest sense: one letter, one sound, no silent letters and no surprises. Once you know the 30 sounds, you can read any word correctly even if you don't understand it. A few letters trip up English speakers:

• j sounds like English y (as in "yes")
• c is always ts (as in "cats")
• č and ć are both roughly "ch"; š is "sh"; ž is the "s" in "measure"
• đ (and dž) is a soft "j" as in "jam"
• r is rolled, and can even be a vowel - the city Vrnjačka has no other vowel in its first syllable

Start with greetings and politeness - they carry you further than vocabulary:

• Dobar dan - Good day (the safe, all-purpose greeting)
• Zdravo / Ćao - Hi / Bye (casual)
• Hvala (lepo) - Thank you (very much)
• Molim - Please, and also "you're welcome" and "pardon?"
• Izvinite - Excuse me / sorry (polite)
• Da / Ne - Yes / No
• Ne razumem - I don't understand
• Da li govorite engleski? - Do you speak English?

In cafes, bakeries, and shops:

• Jednu kafu, molim - One coffee, please
• Koliko košta? - How much is it?
• Da li primate kartice? - Do you take cards?
• Račun, molim - The bill, please
• Živeli! - Cheers! (raise your glass and make eye contact)
• Prijatno - Enjoy (your meal); also a warm way to say goodbye

Getting around and emergencies:

• Gde je...? - Where is...?
• Levo / desno / pravo - Left / right / straight ahead
• Pomozite! - Help!
• Hitno je - It's urgent

Coffee, by the way, is a national ritual, not a caffeine transaction. "Da odemo na kafu" (let's go for a coffee) can mean two hours of conversation - accept the invitation.

Serbian still isn't on Duolingo as of 2026, so newcomers rely on alternatives. Ling and Drops are the most beginner-friendly for daily vocabulary drills; Clozemaster and Glossika build sentence sense once you have basics; and Serbonika is an online platform built specifically for Serbian, with structured courses and grammar aimed at foreigners. Pair any app with 15 minutes of Cyrillic tracing a day and you'll read signs within a couple of weeks.

For real progress, a class beats an app. The best-known option for foreigners is the Serbian Language and Culture Workshop, whose programs were designed with Belgrade University and the Serbian Language Institute. As of 2026, intensive group courses run from roughly €130 per week (10 classes) to about €210 per week (20 classes), with year-round start dates and a summer school. Their standard, lighter course (two 60-minute sessions weekly) runs around €220 for a 10-week group term. Online, Serbonika's full program is around €660, with a summer school near €249 per week. Other reputable schools include Azbukum, Akademija Oxford, and Belgrade Language School. Enrolment usually comes with a certificate you can use toward a residence or student permit - always confirm current fees and start dates directly with the school.

Grammar is where Serbian gets demanding - seven cases and gendered nouns take time - so don't wait to be perfect before speaking. Order in Serbian even if the reply comes back in English. Join a language exchange or "tandem" meetup, read bakery and tram signs aloud, and label things at home. Above all, keep your favourite polite phrase ready: a genuine Hvala with a smile opens more doors in Belgrade than any perfect sentence ever will.
