Bringing your pet to Serbia: import rules and vets in Belgrade

Serbia is a straightforward country to bring a cat or dog into, and an easy place to keep one. The import rules follow the same European logic you may already know, and veterinary care in Belgrade is good and inexpensive. This guide covers what you need to enter the country with a pet, and how to find a vet once you arrive.

What your pet needs to enter Serbia

For a dog, cat or ferret, the core requirements are the same three things:

1. An ISO-standard microchip. It must meet ISO 11784/11785 and be readable by standard scanners. Have it implanted before, or on the same day as, the rabies shot.
2. A valid rabies vaccination. The animal must be at least 12 weeks old when vaccinated, and the vaccination must come after the microchip. A shot given before the chip does not count.
3. Health documentation. Pets from the EU travel on the EU pet passport. From other countries, you need an official veterinary health certificate endorsed by a state-authorized vet, issued close to your travel date.

For most travellers arriving from the EU, a rabies antibody titer test is not required to enter Serbia. Non-commercial travel is generally limited to five animals. Rules for specific breeds classed as dangerous can be stricter, so check if that applies to you. Because requirements can change, confirm the current details with the Serbian authorities or your airline before booking.

Good news if you travel back to the EU

Serbia is on the EU list of approved countries, which means taking your pet from Serbia into an EU member state does not require the rabies titer blood test. For expats who travel home regularly, this makes cross-border trips with a pet much simpler than from many non-EU countries.

Flying in and out of Belgrade

If your pet flies, arrange it with the airline well in advance, as each carrier has its own rules on cabin versus hold, crate sizes and seasonal temperature limits. Registering and vaccinating in Serbia

Once you live here, local law is simple: dogs and cats must be microchipped by 90 days of age and vaccinated against rabies every year. Finding a vet in Belgrade

Veterinary care is one of the pleasant surprises of moving here: competent clinics, short waits and prices far below Western Europe. A routine consultation is typically modest, often in the range of a few thousand dinars. There are private clinics in every district, several of them open around the clock for emergencies. When choosing one, look for:

• Emergency or 24-hour cover, since a couple of Belgrade clinics operate non-stop.
• English-speaking staff, which many central clinics have.
• Services you will need, such as microchipping, passport issuance, and export health certificates for travel.
• A location you can reach easily, ideally near home.

Living with a pet in Belgrade

The city is reasonably pet-friendly.
