EXPO 2027 runs from 15 May to 15 August 2027 on a new site in Surčin, on the southwestern edge of Belgrade, next to Nikola Tesla Airport. The main planned link is a new railway from Zemun Polje through the airport to a station beside the Expo grounds, with electric shuttle buses covering the last stretch. The line is still under construction and its opening has slipped from the end of 2026 to spring 2027. This guide separates what runs today from what is only planned.
Good to know

- Confirmed: regular city buses, trams and trolleybuses in Belgrade have been free since 1 January 2025.

Where the Expo site is
The Expo grounds are in Surčin municipality, which the official FAQ calls the "Surčin complex". The site is next to Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport, on the southwestern side of the city, not far from the Sava river.
The organiser has not published official distances. Planning and media reports place the site about 15 km from the city centre and about 5 km from the airport. A Serbian visitor guide estimates around 20 minutes by car from the centre without traffic. No official visitor access map has been released yet.
The new National Stadium is being built next to the grounds, and the railway terminus carries its name. The stadium itself will not be finished for Expo. According to Danas, citing Forbes Srbija, completion is now expected in early 2028, with works paused from mid-May to mid-August 2027. The station name is a landmark; it does not mean the stadium is an Expo venue.
The new airport railway: stops, travel times and status
The railway is an 18.3 km double-track, electrified, passenger-only line built for speeds of 80–120 km/h, according to B92.
The five stations
- Zemun Polje
- Singidunum, near Dobanovci
- Nikola Tesla Airport, 500 m from Terminal 1, linked by a pedestrian bridge
- Surčin
- National Stadium/EXPO, the terminus next to the grounds
Announced travel times and frequency
The announced journey time is 15–20 minutes from Zemun Polje to the Expo station, and about 30 minutes from Prokop, the main station near the city centre. Trains are planned every 30 minutes normally and every 15 minutes at peak times and during Expo. Nine Chinese-built trains are planned for the line, four due in 2026 and five in 2027.
When will it open?
The opening date has shifted. Earlier statements, such as those reported by Bloomberg Adria, aimed for the line to run by the end of 2026. Newer statements put construction and electrification at the end of 2026, testing from January or February 2027, and passenger service in spring 2027.
That leaves little margin before the 15 May opening. Treat the line as planned until passenger trains are actually running. Fares have not been published.
Expo shuttles and electric buses
Belgrade has ordered 100 Higer electric buses for about €150 million: 50 battery buses and 50 supercapacitor buses, including 15 double-articulated vehicles 25 m long. Two routes are tied directly to Expo:
- Station shuttle: nine articulated buses will run the 1.4 km between National Stadium/EXPO station and the Expo grounds.
- New Belgrade route: six buses will run from Block 45 in New Belgrade to Expo.
After Expo, the buses go to GSP, the city transport company.
Visitor bus routes, timetables and fares have not been published. Regular city buses, trams and trolleybuses are free, so getting to a rail station or the Block 45 terminus should cost nothing. Whether the Expo shuttles will also be free has not been announced. Our Belgrade public transport guide explains how the free network works and which lines still charge.

From the airport to the Expo
Once the railway opens, the planned route is short. You walk 500 m from Terminal 1 over the pedestrian bridge to the Airport station, take the train two stops (Surčin, then National Stadium/EXPO), and then catch the shuttle bus for the final 1.4 km. No separate airport-to-Expo journey time has been published. For comparison, the full ride from Zemun Polje, which passes through the airport, is quoted at 15–20 minutes.
Until the line runs, the road is the only option. The site is roughly 5 km from the airport, so a taxi is a short trip, but no Expo drop-off zone or fare guidance has been announced.
If you are going into the city first, the paid A1 airport minibus (reported at RSD 400) runs to the centre, and our airport to city centre guide covers every option. If this is your first trip, your first 48 hours in Belgrade covers cash, SIM cards and getting around.
From the city centre, New Belgrade and Zemun
- City centre: go to Prokop station and take the train, about 30 minutes to Expo once the line opens.
- Zemun and Zemun Polje: board at Zemun Polje for the 15–20 minute ride. If you are staying in the old part of Zemun, our Zemun walking guide helps you get your bearings.
- New Belgrade: the planned electric bus from Block 45 runs directly to the site. No timetable yet.
If you are still choosing a base, our guide to where to stay for Expo 2027 compares areas by their transport links.
What about the metro?
Belgrade Metro Line 1 will not be ready for Expo. Its deadline moved to late 2028 or early 2029, and later reporting says not before the end of 2030. A 2023 government page that still lists a metro line to Expo is out of date.
River boats and air taxis
Unofficial guides mention a river boat from Belgrade Waterfront and air taxis. A Sava river dock is officially part of the project, but no visitor boat service or air taxi has been announced.
Taxi, ride-hailing and driving
Taxis and ride-hailing apps are the most flexible door-to-door option. No official taxi rank, drop-off point or fare guidance for Expo has been published. Our guide to driving, parking and taxis in Belgrade covers how local taxis and the CarGo app work today.
If you plan to drive, note that no official visitor parking plan and no park-and-ride scheme have been announced. The 20-minute drive from the centre is a no-traffic estimate. RTS has reported estimates of around 60,000 visitors a day on weekdays and 120,000 at weekends (not an official figure), so expect roads near the site to be busy at peak times.
Accessibility
No accessibility details for reaching the site have been published so far, including step-free access at the new stations, accessible shuttle buses or dedicated drop-off points for visitors with reduced mobility. Check the official Expo website closer to the opening, and we will add details here when they appear.
