A Year in Belgrade: The Best Things to Do in Every Season

After the grey months, Belgrade throws its windows open. Kalemegdan Fortress and its park fill with blossom and buskers, and the walking paths along the ridge give you the best free view of the two rivers meeting below. This is the season for Ada Ciganlija before the crowds, long walks in the Košutnjak forest, and coffee spilling onto every terrace in Dorćol and along Cara Lazara.

Spring is also event season. The Belgrade Marathon (its 39th running, on 19 April 2026, starting and finishing at Republic Square) is the country's biggest sporting event, with a popular 5 km "fun run" if 42 km is not your thing - see bgdmarathon.org. In mid-May, Museum Night (Noć muzeja) opens dozens of museums and galleries late into the evening for a single low-priced wristband. Pack layers: April can swing from 8°C to shirtsleeve warmth in a single day.

Summer is Belgrade's showpiece. Locals call Ada Ciganlija "the Belgrade sea" - a river lake with swimming, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, more than fifty sports courts, and rental stands for bikes and boats. It can draw 100,000 people on a weekday and 300,000 on a hot weekend, so arrive before 10:00 for a quiet spot and easy parking. Around the water sit dozens of rustic cafés and splavovi - the floating river clubs that define Belgrade's summer nightlife.

The festival calendar is relentless. BELEF, the Belgrade Summer Festival, runs from 20 June to 17 September 2026 with theatre, concerts and street performance across the city (belef.cebef.rs). Belgrade Beer Fest returns to Ušće Park by the rivers on 28–31 August 2026, with open-air concerts and international brews. For a day trip, the Guča Trumpet Festival (7–9 August 2026, about three hours south) is the loudest, most joyful brass party in the Balkans - guca.rs. One honest note: EXIT's famous Novi Sad edition is not taking place in 2026, so build your plans around the local line-up instead.

When the heat breaks, Belgrade turns cultured. BEMUS, the oldest and most prestigious classical-music festival in Serbia, fills concert halls across the second half of October, followed at month's end by the internationally respected Belgrade Jazz Festival. Foodies get the Coffee and Chocolate Festival and a run of design markets before December.

This is also the prettiest season for walking. The chestnut and linden avenues of Kalemegdan, Topčider and Košutnjak turn gold, and the light over the rivers at Ušće is spectacular at dusk. Autumn is grape-harvest time, too: winery events and rakija tastings pop up across the city, and the Šumadija vineyards are an easy weekend away. Bring a jacket - November brings the first real chill and the occasional fog rolling off the Danube.

Belgrade does winter with warmth. From early December, Belgrade Winter Fest strings lights along pedestrian Knez Mihailova, with a giant tree, a carousel, mulled wine and Serbian street food. Open-air ice rinks appear at Nikola Pašić Square (central, free to enter) and by the Ušće mall; skate rental runs about 3–4 EUR as of 2026.

New Year's Eve is a street party - free open-air concerts and fireworks over the fortress - and note that Serbs celebrate Orthodox Christmas on 7 January, with a second, quieter round of festivity. When you want snow underfoot, Kopaonik, Serbia's premier ski resort (more than 55 km of runs, 24 lifts, roughly three hours south), is the classic winter weekend; budget European-level prices for lift passes and gear rental as of 2026. Dress seriously - January regularly sits below freezing, sharpened by the košava wind.

One rule makes every season easier: since 1 January 2025, public transport in Belgrade is free - buses, trams, trolleybuses and the BG Train, for residents and visitors alike. The only paid rides are the A1 airport bus (about 400 RSD) and the express "E" minibus lines (about 200 RSD), bought on board. Beyond that, the old BusPlus card is no longer needed, so ignore any guide that still tells you to buy one.
