Free things to do in Belgrade

Belgrade is an easy city to enjoy on a small budget, and some of the best free things to do here are also the most memorable. Start with the biggest freebie of all: since January 2025, all city buses, trams and trolleybuses are free for everyone, with no ticket or app needed, so simply getting around costs you nothing. Here is how to fill several days without spending much.

Walk Belgrade Fortress and Kalemegdan Park

The Belgrade Fortress at Kalemegdan is the city's top sight and free to explore. You can walk the ramparts, wander the park, see the Pobednik (Victor) monument and look out over the point where the Sava meets the Danube, all without paying a dinar. Only some of the small museums and the tower interiors inside carry a charge.

Stroll the old town and Skadarlija

Window-shopping and people-watching along Knez Mihailova, the main pedestrian street, costs nothing, and the same goes for Republic Square and the cobbled bohemian street of Skadarlija. Come in the early evening to catch the street musicians and the after-work crowd.

See the Temple of Saint Sava

Entry to the Temple of Saint Sava, one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world, is free. The vast gold mosaic in the interior is the highlight, and the surrounding Vračar plateau is a pleasant place to sit for a while.

Follow the rivers

Belgrade's waterfronts are made for free days out. Walk the Sava promenade and Beton Hala, follow the Danube quay in Zemun, or in summer head to Ada Ciganlija, the river island with free beaches, walking paths and swimming. From spring to autumn you can also reach Great War Island, a green nature spot right off the fortress.

Wander the green markets

The city's pijaca (open markets) cost nothing to browse and give you a real feel for daily life. Kalenić in Vračar is the most photogenic, while Zeleni Venac and Bajloni are central and lively. Bring a little cash if the fruit tempts you.

Find a viewpoint or a park

Belgrade has plenty of free green space beyond Kalemegdan. Tašmajdan park near the center and the wooded Topčider and Košutnjak to the south are good for a walk, and the bridges over the Sava give you wide views of the skyline for the price of the crossing, which is nothing. Sunset from the Zemun quay or the fortress walls is one of the best free things the city offers.

Look for street art and pay-what-you-want tours

The Savamala district became known for its murals, and wandering its backstreets to spot them costs nothing. Several companies also run tip-based walking tours of the old town, so you decide what it was worth at the end. Just confirm in advance that the tour is genuinely pay-what-you-want rather than a fixed fee.
